Example text

The lettering throughout Terry's volume of botanical paintings from nature is all done in the same hand and is uniform in style, including the title page, species identifications, location and time of execution, and the occasional personal explanatory note. We can safely conclude that Terry herself assembled the book; there is no reason to believe that anyone other than she provided any of the information it contains. Botanically Terry may have followed her father's lead, but artistically and in assembling her paintings into a book she followed closely in her mother's footsteps.

49 Three years had passed since the death of her husband. Clues are few to the events in her life during that time, but they reveal enough to allow us to construct a fairly probable scenario. Doubtless Terry left Minnesota soon after her husband's death. She returned to Massachusetts, where she had family and roots, most probably to Amherst; her brother Edward was professor of hygiene and physical education at Amherst College. There is some indication that she served as secretary to President Seelye at the college around this time.

Terry found time for plant collecting in Northampton in the vicinity of the college. She often had Emily Terry in her flower garden in front of Hubbard House, Smith College, ca. 1905-9. (Courtesy of Arthur W. ) the companionship of the Reverend George H. Gilbert, whose son, Arthur, as a small child in the first decade of the 1900s, recalls seeing them on their botanical outings: "Mrs. Terry was a frequent and welcome visitor. She and my father . . "10 Terry was rewarded with particular botanical success on at least two such occasions.
