By contrast, reactive concretes and mortars stored at lower temperatures react more slowly, but eventually expansion reaches the same level and then exceeds the expansions attained at the higher temperature. The illustration given is for expansions at 20°C and 40°C, but similar comparisons have been drawn for various temperatures in the range between 8°C and 50°C. There are several possible explanations for these observations, both probably contributing to the observed effect. At lower temperature the reaction proceeds more slowly.

Reaction continues in the solid state but is greatly facilitated by transport through a reactive hightemperature melt. The resulting product, known as clinker, is finally cooled to ambient and ground to a high specific surface area, typically 3000–5000 cm2/g. The microstructure and mineralogy of clinker are characteristic of a manufactured product but also show certain affinities to those observed in igneous rocks.
